Education and training prior to 1967:
After finishing school, he trained as motor mechanic at Daimler-Benz, studied engineering and earned a degree in Engineering.


from 1967 on:
Joined Daimler-Benz AG , worked in various corporate divisions, finally in the international commercial vehicle service department by Daimler-Benz Stuttgart.


1974 – 1982:
Posted in South Africa, responsible for Mercedes Benz South Africa country wide service organisation and was appointed Board Member responsible for engineering in 1980.


1982 – 1984:
President of the off-highway truck company EUCLID in Cleveland, Ohio. After acquisition of company Freightliner (one-way truck company), successful restructuring followed by successful sale of this US off highway truck company; returned to Mercedes Benz South Africa.


1984 – 1987:
Board Member Technical, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Management Board at Mercedes-Benz South Africa.


1987:
Returned to Daimler Benz HQ in Stuttgart as Director international of commercial vehicles, responsible for worldwide sales and marketing. Appointed Deputy Board Member.


May 1989:
Appointed CEO of newly formed Deutsche Aerospace AG (DASA), which consolidated aeronautics activities and important parts of the defence engineering activities of Daimler Benz, including Dornier, MTU, Telefunken Systemtechnik, MBB, Deutsche Airbus. His work as DASA Chairman also included membership on the Board of the group´s holding company Daimler-Benz AG.


May 1995:
Appointed CEO of Daimler-Benz AG.


December 1998:
Began term as Chairman of the Board of the merged DaimlerChrysler AG, with Robert Eaton as Co-Chairman (formerly Head of Chrysler).


April 2000:
Became sole CEO of DaimlerChrysler AG following Robert Eaton’s resignation on March 31.


July 2000:
He substantially contributes to the founding of the European Aerospace Defence and Space Company EADS and parent of Airbus, Europe’s largest aerospace and second largest defence group.


December 2005:
Schrempp decided to retire as Chairman of the Management Board of DaimlerChrysler to pursue other activities. He continues as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Mercedes-Benz of South Africa (MBSA).
